Living between two lakes
Acworth calls itself the Lake City, and with Lake Acworth in town and Lake Allatoona right next door, a lot of local homes are shaped by the water. Humidity stays high from late spring into fall, shade from the pines keeps surfaces damp, and that combination is hard on anything made of wood. Decks turn gray and green, boards cup and split, railings loosen, and the bottom of fences and door frames begin to rot. Screened porches collect mildew and spring pollen in equal measure.
For lake area homes, we usually start outside. A pressure wash removes mildew and pollen from decks, siding, walkways and porches. Then we replace soft deck boards and stair treads, tighten railings, reseal or stain, and fix rotted trim before it lets water into the wall. Keeping gutters clear is just as important here, since overflow on red clay keeps the ground soggy around the foundation.
Summer storms rolling across the lake can also bring down limbs onto fences, gutters and porch screens. After a storm, Acworth owners often need a quick round of repairs: rehanging a gutter section, replacing torn porch screens, fixing a fence panel and hauling off the debris. Those small fixes keep a minor storm from turning into water damage inside the house.
